Two stories, really. Maybe even three! I am confused I hinted at the one just the other day and, if you're really good, maybe you'll guess where I'm going. Laughing

OK, first things first. Many of you will be familiar with this..

.. Sea-Master Triple-Date (or "Multi-Function" in Alpha-speak) automatic, as I've posted it beaucoup times over the years. I purchased it in March of 2006 for the lordly sum of US $78.99 shipped, and it has been a stalwart fine-running favorite over the years.

Almost from the very first, this certain bloke at work has been trying to buy it off me. It's gotten to be something of a tradition over the years, in a half-joking kinda way. The way it works, he'll first admire the watch, and express a burning desire to own one just like it. I'll name a price by saying "{insert dollar amount} and it's yours!" He'll counter with a ridiculously lowball (compared to me asking price) offer, and I'll decline vehemently, always with a lecture on what a cheap-skate he is, and sometimes a good cussing besides. Smile As I recall my asking price started out at $250, and his offer at $150. Thing is, over the years the two have grown ever closer, by small (miniscule!) degrees. We've done this dozens of times.

Now, the other thing that you should know is that, while I don't quite see this configuration as a "faux" or "ersatz chrono" as some do (I reserve that label for watches like this), a Triple-Date is not my favorite complication, and lately I've been wondering if I wouldn't be happier with the 3-Hand Date version.

So. Long story short, a couple of weeks ago we went through The Routine, and I offered it to him for $100. A fraction of the price 5 years ago, but then it does have significant wabi now, including scratches on both crystal and bezel insert. He countered with a $75 offer, and something in his tone got my attention. Instead of the lecture (and optional cussing) I came back with "Make it $90, and we've got a deal". To my utter astonishment I am confused he pulled out his wallet and began counting bills. Sold! Thumbs up!

After the deal was sealed, and I finished my smoke, I retired to my office upstairs, and called up the Alpha webfront for to order me a brand-new one. Well, imagine my shock and horror to find that the Sea-Masters were no longer listed on the Alpha site. Oops!

ArrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgH! Eek!

So. I've been moping around for more than a week, bemoaning the fact that I sold the Sea-Master Triple-Date. Made the linked post to Bro. Lawrence during that time. Considered and dismissed the as too much $$ for not close enough. Agonized over whether it might not be time to bite the bullet, save me pennies, and buy the real-deal .

But then I visit Mr. pinkpink's webfront today and find that..

Alpha James Bond homage

WooooooooHOO! Clapping! The Sea-Master is back! Is Happy Day!

Sure, I immediately ordered one. Smile

Now, let's look at my original Sea-Master in retrospect. I paid $78.99 for it originally, then sold it at an $11.01 profit. My Incoming! Date Model exceeds the selling price by 99-cents, so the bottom line is that I wore the watch for a half-decade+ and, not only is the incoming watch free, I'm still $10.02 to the good. WIS Honeymoon If that's not the WIS equivalent of I Dream Of Jeanie, I'll eat me hat. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Please join me in my rejoicing, Dear Constant Reader...

Is Happy Day! Alpha Sea-Master James Bond homage Watch or Accessory Review

October 02, 2011 10:34AM

You might recall my "incoming post" of 10 September. If you missed it, please go back and catch up, as it's pretty much a prerequisite to 'set up' this post.

Go ahead. Wink I'll wait. Innocent

OK. I'd normally never attempt a comprehensive review of a watch that I've owned for such a short time. But having owned the pointer-date (aka "Multi-Function") version of the watch for so long, it feels like I know the watch. It is the same darned watch, basically, just converted to a 3-hander. And, sure I make no bones about the fact that I love the Seamaster style, and that I'm fond of as a brand. So I won't pretend that this review is some paragon of objectivity. Wink But I trust that it might still be illuminating and informative, in its own modest way.

But let's have a photo before we get too deep into it!

As you can see, Alpha packs the product very well. They always have done good in this regard, but I got to say that they seem to have stepped it up a notch. The green suede pouch seems to be ubiquitous across the line now, with a business card and a modest generic instruction manual packed in the pocket. The watch itself is wrapped in so much protective plastic film that, frankly, it's almost an annoyance when it comes time to remove it. A swatch of the green suede is inserted between bracelet and watch, then into a plastic bag, which goes into the green pouch, which goes into another bag surrounded by foam peanuts, and then that goes into the box full of foam peanuts.

A word about the buying experience. I ordered directly from the Alpha webfront, on 10 September. Now some impatient sorts seem to be less than impressed with Alpha's response time. Indeed, while you will find the watch in the PMWF TOP 10 Watch Recommendations - TOP 10 less than USD 100, you'll also find that most of the text there is an indictment of Alpha's shipping/service. Let me say right up front that my experience couldn't be more different!

I requested two (2) spare links at the time I ordered, via a note in my PayPal payment. Here's how it went down:

* I received a confirmation-of-payment from Alpha within the hour.

* When I got up on Monday 12 September, I found a message informing that Alpha would be happy to supply extra links at US $5 per. And Mr. PinkPink also asked "Do you really need extra link? Watch is very big! Fit 9.5 inch!" And sure enough, the web site states "LENGTH : 9.5 INCHS (WITH 4 ADJUST LINKS )" However, based on my experience with the Multi-Function model, I was pretty sure this was in error. So I assured Mr. PinkPink that I've a wrist like an ankle and, yes I've Paypaled you an additional $10 for the spare links.

* I got a reply within minutes thanking me for my business, and assuring me that the 2 spare links would be included. Not too surprising, as the Hong Kong local time would have been ~ 16:30.

* Got another eMail that very same evening, shortly before 22:00 my time, saying the watch had been shipped. Which tells me that Mr. PinkPink (or an assistant) Got Right On It, as their local time would've been ~ 08:45 (on Tuesday). Can't beat that! Cool

* The watch shipped via Hong Kong Post Air, which is Alpha's default. Though non-trackable, it is free. Thumbs up! It arrived on Thursday 29 September, a total of 17 days transit time.

But I know you're thinking "Enough! Break bad with the photos, Ricky! I am angry!" Laughing

OK! OK!

Alpha James Bond homage

A word of apology.. due to the domed crystal, this watch is a real booger-bear to photograph. I'm in no way happy with my efforts. Frowning

Still.. ain't it purty?! Laughing

Alpha James Bond homage

Now, obviously, the styling is very faithful to a certain 0mega model. Some might say "faithful to a fault". Oops! And they'd have a point. Near as I can tell, this watch is dimensionally and stylistically identical to the 0mega, if you discount the logos and markings. And that brings up the "Alpha sells re-branded Fakes" argument. I won't dispute it, as the evidence says that, at least in some cases, it's exactly right. And I reckon that if you looked long and hard enough (perhaps not hard at all on Canal Street Wink), you'd find this very watch wearing 0mega markings. I'll leave the ethics of that aside and say that, be it as it may, this one doesn't, and I view the fact that it's as close to a molecular-level clone of the 0mega as legally possible to be A Good Thing.

OK, enough of that. Let's "look at the numbers":

Case: Full Stainless Steel, screwdown crown and caseback, 42mm X 48mm X 15mm thick

Bezel: 120-click unidirectional rotating

Crystal: Domed mineral glass

Bracelet: Full Stainless Steel, 20mm non-tapering, 4.5mm thick, solid links, solid endlinks, screwpins, machined deployant and diver's extension

Movement: Sea-Gull TY2806, 21-jewel automatic

Dial: Ceramic with wave pattern

Weight: (with 2 extra bracelet links) 187 grams

Water Resistance: 3 ATM / 100 feet

Warranty: 1 year

Price: (as of October 2011) US $90.99 including shipping
And a word about 3F (fit-finish-function): In short, it is excellent by any standards and, at the price point, very nearly beggars belief. I won't say that it's truly a match for the Very Rich Man's Watch! to which it's styled after.. but I reckon it comes a lot closer than many of you would believe!

Even so, it comes up a wee bit short in certain areas, compared to my departed ca. 2005 Multi-Function model. For instance..

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

The laser-etching on the caseback is not quite as crisply executed. Mind you, I have much experience with laser-marking professionally, and am something of a Snob in this regard. Laughing It's not bad, ye ken.. but I could definitely do better, personally. Wink

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

Also, the action of the clasp is not quite as positive on this one. I mean, it's good, but whereas the Multi-Function closed like a bank vault, something about the feel of this one makes me give it a give it a tug after I close the clasp, just to make sure that it really 'caught'. It's never failed that test, mind. So even though it's more a matter of my old one being exceptionally good, this one still falls short by comparison.

Make no mistake, though, this bracelet's a wonder!

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

Solid-links stainless steel, including solid endlinks, with a fully machined deployant and diver's extension. While the clasp is a bit less solid-feeling than the old one, the action of the diver's extension is superior here - it gives a firm 'snap' when it locks into place, and requires a healthy amount of force to unfurl it. Everything is held together with single-sided screwpins. Sizing it was a snap, as the pins have very smooth & precise thread engagement. And, yes, both extra links were required to fit me ankle-sized wrist. I don't know what's up with Mr. PinkPinks measuring skills, but the "LENGTH : 9.5 INCHS.." statement on the web site is B.S.! As delivered, I reckon it would fit a 7¾ inch wrist. There is no micro-adjust, but the OEM bracelet does include 2 half-links. Note that the half-links are not available as spares, only full links (at US $5 per).

One surprise was that, where the ca. 2005 bracelet was marked "STAINLESS STEEL 316L", this one is marked simply "STAINLESS STEEL". I am confused Is it really some other grade, rather than 316L? I dunno. Complete disclosure demands that I point out..

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..that the sides of the deployant links exhibited some kind of blotchy discoloration. This was NOT corrosion, as it (mostly) wiped off with a dry micro-fiber polishing cloth. Once I hit it with fine Scothbrite, it was totally gone. I think it's surface spalling, caused by the edges of the link arms rubbing together. No biggie, but...

One area where the case is less than perfectly-finished is between the lugs. I forgot to take a picture of this but, to my delight Reto had a photo in the Top Ten Post which shows it quite well:

Alpha James Bond homage

Note how this surface is quite coarsely-brushed, compared to the other, more visible brushed areas of the case. My Multi-Function model was the same, so this is obviously common to all versions of the watch. A niggle, mind you, as you've got to really be lookin' hard or you'd never notice.

Where it counts, the fit & finish..

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..is superlative! The case and bracelet offer a nice mix of mirror-polished and micro-brushed satin surfaces, and both are very finely executed indeed. The dial, hands, and bezel are razor-sharp even when viewed through me 14X loupe. It must be admitted that the polished hands are something less than flawlessly mirror-smooth.. but that's something you'd only ever notice with the loupe.

And while the caseback laser-etching is less than world-class, the markings on the clasp..

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..are very well-done indeed.

And before you pooh-pooh the CHRONOMETER claim, be aware that this particular example easily meets COSC Chronometer specs. This morning, 52 hours after being synched to The Atomic Clock, it checks in at +3 seconds! This would be the Envious of many a Very Rich Man's Watch!, up to and including the Real Deal 0mega Co-Axial. Nor am I the only one who's had this experience. Wink

The engine which provides this superlative performance..

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..is a plain-jane undecorated TY2806, a 21-jewel variant of the venerable ST-16. Hacking, handwinding, rock-solid, smooth and accurate. A-OK by me!

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

The functionality is fine in other areas, too. The caseback is very robust and heavy, with a nice thick o-ring seal and PERFECT thread action. Likewise the screwdown crown is smooth & positive, with a full 2-turns of thread engagement.

And the bezel is a wonder! It's a 120-click unidirectional rotating unit, with an action that is a sheer pleasure. The action is very light, which is A Good Thing since the scalloped bezel doesn't offer the best finger-purchase ever. But it's also buttery-smooth and positive - close your eyes and operate the bezel, and you could easily mistake it for a Very Rich Man's Watch!. This is another area where it surpasses my 2005 model. While it had an OK bezel action, it was nowhere near the sensory delight that this one is.

Another area where the 2011 model excels is..

Alpha James Bond homage
Click HERE for larger photo or HERE for supersized photo

..the lume. Now, granted, this is more a case of the 2005 model being especially weak in the lume department. Weak? Frankly, the lume sucked. Thumbs down While this one is not a world-class glow-through-the night TORCH, is does show much brighter and more robust initial illumination. And whereas the old one would fade within minutes, this one is good for a few hours.

So, to summarize, I couldn't be happier with this one. I know some will think me a heretic for saying so, but this is all the I'll ever need, and removes my desire for an actual 0mega model. Smile

And, yes, I have handled the actual models. Indeed, the 0mega equivalent of this model was on my Short List on the Caribbean Watch Shopping Orgy. Was, in fact, the closest competition for the Mido watches Multifort (the other serious competitors being , , and ).

In the end, the reason the Mido got the nod over the 0mega was value. The price of entry was ~ 27% less with the Mido and, further, it was a chronograph vs. 3-hand date. An chrono would have run me more that four times the cost of the ! Eek! And that's precisely why this is the closest I'll ever come to a blue-dialed Bond . For me personally, it's 75% the watch at a mere 5% of the cost. Thumbs up! And I'm being generous there.. frankly, it's probably more like "90% the watch". Laughing

One thing's for sure..

Great review.

Good to hear the lume has improved. That is the only fault I find on mine. The lume can be charged but fades away very quick.

Question about the color. How blue is it? When you look at, is it blue or it is only blue when the sun light hits it a certain way?

Thanks

Well.. neither bezel nor dial are a bright blue.

The bezel insert is a slightly more vibrant hue than the dial, and always appears blue, no matter the light. The dial, however, does appear nearly black in some lighting conditions. In this regard it, again, seems..

..quite faithful to the 0mega.

Yup, that describes my ca. 2005 model to a 'T'. This one is far and away better though, again, still not -class. I will say this, though - it's better lume than some Very Rich Man's Watch! Swiss Made Watch or Movement watches I've seen. Wink

I wish they made a version of that watch with the sword hands. I'd like to get a blue wave dial watch, but the bond style hands don't appeal to me.

I've gotten use to the bond hands but I prefer the sword hands. (n/t)

pumpkin2001 66 October 02, 2011 12:24PM

Perhaps it's the iconoclast in me, but I prefer the Bond hands.. and by a hefty margin!

I mean, I like the 0mega sword hands. Thumbs up!

But compared to the Bond hands they seem a bit.. well, generic, to me. After all, US $4 and a quick eMail to Uncle Otto will net you a pair of hands that are practically identical.

The Bond hands? No. You'd be hard-pressed to find anything close.

Just me 2¢, YMMV. Wink

Cheers!

I don't fault Omega for coming up with something different, but they seem a bit too gimmicky to me. Like they're trying too hard to be different just for the sake of being different. Sword hands look just more classic to me. But that's my $0.02 on that matter.

Do you know what hand size the TY2806 movement takes? Certainly if I can find the right hands building my own sword-hands Alpha is a very doable project.
Dre 44 October 02, 2011 08:48PM

Re: Do you know what hand size the TY2806 movement takes? URL

There's the rub. Wink

I don't - not for sure. The Sea-Gull web site seems to indicate 1.0 mm minute, 1.50 mm hour, and 0.18 mm seconds. And those are pretty common sizes with Chinese movements. But I'm far from certain of this...

FWIW, if I'm right, you'll be hard pressed to find suitable hands, at least from Otto Frei. Their best selection, by far, is in the popular 70/120 size, followed by 90/150. Quite odd ducks, 100/150. Oops!

I did some poking around after replying to you and did find the same information. And like you, didn't find much at ofrei for those hand sizes. Oh well, it was a good idea before it fizzled out...

Good on ye! Clapping!

A replacement hand set is so inexpensive, yet can potentially make such a HUGE difference in the appearance of a watch, it is (IMHO!) unarguably the Most Bang For The Buck Mod there is.

I'm with ye there. I am in no wise a fan of Mercedes Hands meself. Thumbs down Indeed, I might even go so far as to say that I hate them.

That being said, they do look natural on certain watches, and I do have 3 keepers that use them. Mind you, 2 of those 3 are the slightly elongated 'Cathedral style" hands which are more of an ellipse vs. a circle, so they don't really count. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

..but it runs a lordly US $12.99 shipped Eek!, so I probably won't bother. It lines up pretty good with the dial chapter markers, and in any case it's no worse than many a more illegitimate unit.

I looked at several other Alpha Seamaster pics online and all the pips were perfectly centered inside the triangle. Sending you another insert would certainly be less expensive than replacing the watch.

But, you know, my ca. 2005 Multi-Function model was far from perfect in this regard, too. No doubt this is partly why it doesn't really bother me. After a bit, I totally got used to it. And the fact that this one exhibits a similar quirk makes it seem familiar, even nostalgic. Wink

Frankly, though, I do not want to exchange the watch as a unit. 'tis too good otherwise. Particularly the going-rate! It's not unheard-of to find a ST-16 that runs at half the COSC Chronometer spec straight out-of-the box. But it's not exactly to be expected, either. Wink

Re: Hey Ricky, sorry if I missed it but does it have a screw down crown?

Forgive me for answering a PM "in the clear" Oops!, but this is definitely germane to the thread. Blushing

Affirmative on the screwdown crown.

I know in the past many have taken reps (this I would call a homage) & give it better gaksets & new crystal & have made the WR level much better.
Don't think it's necessary. My ca. 2005 Multi-Function model was submerged on many an occasion, and regularly cleaned under the tap with mild soap and a toothbrush. Never had any problem whatsoever. Given that this one deletes the pushers, and after taking a peek at the caseback seal, I'd be amazed if it isn't watertight. Indeed, I reckon the 3 ATM WR rating is probably conservative. I expect that 10 ATM is more like it...

I had the Alpha PO yrs ago, but it kept getting water in it from just washing my hands, then again that watch does not have a screw down crown.

I remember it well. Oops! Trust me I do. Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off

Cheers!
